Joana Vasconcelos presented Around the World at Casa Triângulo, São Paulo, her third solo exhibition at the gallery, bringing together works shown in Brazil for the first time. The exhibition developed from a past collaboration with Maison Dior, initiated with the monumental textile sculpture Valkyrie Miss Dior created for the Autumn–Winter 2023/2024 fashion show, later expanded into new sculptural forms. At the centre of the exhibition was Valkyrie Leonie, a large-scale suspended sculpture from Vasconcelos’ iconic Valkyries series, initiated in 2004. Using Dior fabrics transformed through traditional craft techniques such as crochet, embroidery and sewing, the work brings together mythological, historical and contemporary references, evoking female figures associated with resistance, care and symbolic strength. Expanding through space as an immersive textile organism, the sculpture intertwines body, memory and material. In dialogue with this monumental presence, the installation Drops comprised a group of suspended sculptures exploring lightness, repetition and suspension. Made from the same materials, these works extend Vasconcelos’ sculptural investigation of textile, offering a quieter, more contemplative counterpoint. Around the World reaffirmed the artist’s ability to transform symbolic materials into sculptural experiences of strong sensory and conceptual impact.
