For over four thousand years, motherhood has shaped myths, rituals and images across societies. Drawing on Mediterranean cultural traditions, Bonnes Mères explores motherhood as an intimate experience, a social construct, a political subject and a recurring theme in art. Structured in three thematic sections, the exhibition moves from traditional maternal figures to the diverse and sometimes invisible realities of motherhood, concluding with reflections on the bonds and forms of transmission between mother and child. Designed as an immersive and light-filled journey, the exhibition highlights the physical, symbolic and political dimensions of motherhood while honouring maternal figures often left in the shadows.
Bringing together around 400 works, from ancient artefacts to contemporary installations, the exhibition features artists including Joana Vasconcelos, Kader Attia, Nour Awada, Omar Bâ, Letizia Battaglia, Jean-Honoré Fragonard, Prune Nourry, Pierre et Gilles, Niki de Saint Phalle, Zineb Sedira, Freddy Tsimba and Mâkhi Xenakis, with loans from institutions such as the Musée d’Orsay, the Benaki Museum in Athens and the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris.
