In 2025, the MADP – Museu de Artes Decorativas Portuguesas, part of the Ricardo do Espírito Santo Silva Foundation (FRESS) in Lisbon, presented the exhibition Drag Race – The Transgression of the Baroque. The exhibition focused on Drag Race (2023), examining Joana Vasconcelos’ creative process through a reverse reading, moving from the finished work back to its original conceptual impulse. Drawing inspiration from the opulence of Portuguese gilt woodcarving, maritime motifs from the Monastery of Tibães and the grandeur of the Coach of the Oceans, the work intertwines the Baroque imagery of King João V’s carriages with the irreverence of red feathers, a symbol of freedom and subversion. The Porsche 911 Targa Carrera is transformed into a visual manifesto that questions institutional luxury, theatricality and excess as contemporary forms of expression. The realisation of Drag Race resulted from a close collaboration with FRESS, engaging the expertise of its master craftsmen in areas such as woodcarving, metal chasing and gilding. The work stands as a dialogue between tradition and contemporaneity, reaffirming the relevance of Portuguese decorative arts within contemporary artistic practice.
