"HERANÇA" COLAB WITH VHILS

Joana Vasconcelos comes together with Alexandre Farto, aka Vhils, to create the “Herança” project. This unprecedented collaboration “pays tribute to women in rural Portugal and addresses a theme that runs through the country’s recent history: the movement of people from the countryside to urban areas, bringing with them practices, objects, and memories that have come to coexist with the urban context (...) the artists’ styles—Vhils’s subtraction and Joana Vasconcelos’s accumulation—construct a dialogue that reflects on: memory, migration, and identity,” describes the Underdogs gallery. The silkscreen tarpaulin canvases are initially designed by Vhils and later worked on at the Joana Vasconcelos Studio, where the artist adds detailed handcrafted elements, such as embroidery, techniques traditionally associated with the domestic and feminine spheres.

“Herança” comprises an edition of 150 pieces that result from the convergence of the two artists’ visual languages, establishing a dialogue between memory and the contemporary.
