Joana Vasconcelos em exposição dedicada a Maria Bordalo Pinheiro

The exhibition Entangled Lines is dedicated to the artist Maria Augusta Bordalo Pinheiro, whose work, long underappreciated, enters into dialogue with creations by contemporary artists Ana Silva, Joana Vasconcelos, and Sonia Gomes.

Presented at the National Museum of Contemporary Art (MNAC-MC), the exhibition aims to restore and highlight the work of the artist, native of Caldas da Rainha, whose work directly influenced Joana Vasconcelos’s artistic journey.

During her work on the restoration of the Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro Factory, Joana Vasconcelos discovered a piece created by Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro and Maria Augusta Bordalo Pinheiro.  This discovery became a source of inspiration, not only for her professional ethics but also for the way she bridged the so-called “minor” arts with the “major” ones, particularly in the intersection of lace and ceramics, as highlighted by the director of  MNAC-MC.

The works by the artists brought together in this exhibition reflect on themes such as craftsmanship, gender, and memory, reinforcing the importance of recognising women in art history. The exhibition features “Tsarina” and “Sun Tzu” from the Bestiary series, in which Joana Vasconcelos reinterprets Bordallo Pinheiro's ceramic pieces.

Entangled Lines can be visited until the 2nd of May.
