The artful installation Spin consists of numerous colourful blow-driers mounted in the shape of a flower encircling a circular mirror. Stepping onto the work’s platform will activate the blow-driers and you are treated to a mirror image of your own wind-swept face. Vasconcelos’s humorous installation initially puts one in mind of the Greek tale about the boy Narcissus, who falls in love with his own mirror image. Narcissistic tendencies are a common feature of modern times crystallised in the ever-growing selfie-culture. However, Vasconcelos ironises the idea of a narcissistic subject by making a mess of our controlled looks. The blow-drier, conceived as an aid to beauty in the home, creates a diffuse and surprising expression in a public museum context. Vasconcelos’s sophisticated use of humour is closely linked to the artist’s critical attitude – in this case directed at modern man’s tendency to self-obsession.
