With A Todo o Vapor [Full Steam Ahead], Joana Vasconcelos again utilises one of women's most archetypal day-to-day appliances, transforming its functionality. Vasconcelos has created a robotic ballet with a set of colourful BOSCH steam irons (in red, yellow and green: the colours of the Portuguese flag) that reinterpret the blooming of a lotus flower (a Buddhist symbol of rebirth, spiritual purity and beauty), which is known for blooming in dark, muddy waters.
A synchronised sci-fi domestic-inspired choreography, seemingly alluring, upbeat and festive, the disturbing female realm is played out through the opposing relationship between the tenderness of the petals and the cold hardness of stainless steel. Once again, we are faced with the echo of her love for the baroque, opulent ornaments, irony and humour.
