Material Girl

Joana Vasconcelos’ Valkyries are sculptures inspired by the female figures of Norse mythology which flew over the battlefields, bringing the bravest warriors back to life, to join the deities in Valhalla. Made with textile materials, they fully express the artist's creativity, through a variety of fabrics, crochet and trimmings. The end result is a surprising combination of volumes, textures and colours, using manual skills and updating the connection between arts and crafts for the 21st century. Formed by a central body, head, tail and several arms, many of the Valkyries also combine the artisan's expertise with technological components, through the insertion of light that – simulating vibration and breathing – provides movement and life.
