Animal !?

Joana Vasconcelos took part in the group exhibition Animal!?, a thematic project devised by curator Christian Alandete, which proposed an interdisciplinary and transhistorical approach to the representation of animals in art. Bringing together works from different periods and artistic languages, the exhibition examined the enduring presence of animality in art history and its role in questioning the boundaries between the human and the non-human. Within this framework, Joana Vasconcelos presented Primrose, from her Bestiary series, in which the animal world functions as a symbolic and imaginative territory. Through sculptural transformation, the work explores notions of hybridity, otherness and projection, opening up readings that intersect the fantastic, the emotional and the critical. Animal!? addressed animality as a field of aesthetic, social and political reflection, engaging with themes such as anthropomorphism, identity and exclusion. Joana Vasconcelos’ participation contributed to this broader discourse, reaffirming the animal figure as a mediator for rethinking the relationship between nature, culture and contemporary society.
