Various retractable clotheslines, from which dozens of lamps hang upside down, are attached from top to bottom to a tall, narrow rectangular structure. Deslunado parodies everyday lamps while evoking the light wells commonly found in many buildings, where the limited space is often used to hang laundry. This close proximity creates a sense of ambiguity. Neither fully public nor entirely private, these shared areas of residential buildings allow residents both to observe and to be observed. In Deslunado, Joana Vasconcelos draws on architectural references and domestic materials to explore the unstable territory between interior and exterior, public and private, with humour and irreverence.
