VALKYRIE RÁN

Valkyrie Rán presents a rainbow of colours, varied textures and rich details, resulting from an assertive combination of Kvadrat textiles and artisanal techniques – patchwork, bead embroidery and crochet. The work explores multiple gradations in different colours, beginning with the lighter orange of the central body, moving along to more vibrant orange tones that connect to the other colours of the piece’s remaining elements. The limits of the different tones form lines and volumes that recall contour lines of a topographic map. The soft colours and elegant decorations that compose the work distinguish it from the exuberance that is characteristic of earlier works, thus interpreting a Nordic and refined taste. The multiple textures and varied patterns of the Kvadrat fabrics are the raw material that builds a large part of the different volumes of the work. Valkyrie Rán is also punctuated with sequins to catch the light and give the piece some glimmer. These sequins are used in a way that is similar to how white was used in paintings; in this particular case, they are used to underline the relief of the artwork’s depth. The artist invited compositor and musician Jonas Runa to develop a light and sound composition that integrates and covers the monumental installation, creating surprising special effects.

The artist’s challenging work also incorporates thousands of LEDs, creating a spectacular play between light and life. The ‘Valkyrie’ takes on the character of a gentle guardian: the sublime heart of ARoS Aarhus Kunstmuseum.
