WAR GAMES

A lover of vintage cars, Joana Vasconcelos' grandfather gave her this classic Morris Oxford to practise her driving skills after getting her licence. Without a dent, the artist's first car was elevated to the status of a work of art, in which she projected universes that were both antagonistic and familiar. The exterior is riddled with dozens of plastic rifles and red LED lights that switch on and off uninterruptedly; the interior is filled with hundreds of stuffed toys that wiggle noisily, clamouring for attention and space. The blackness of the appearance, in contrast to the colourful passengers, allows the artist to combine the warlike character and the festive side, in a journey that goes from childhood to adulthood, from dream to nightmare, from darkness to light. And the title emphasises the metaphorical play of this innovative memento mori.
