Joana Vasconcelos’ Valkyries are sculptures inspired by the female figures of Norse mythology, who flew over battlefields, bringing the bravest warriors back to life to join the deities in Valhalla, the realm of the gods. Made from diverse textiles, this sculpture expresses the full force of the artist's imagination, through an exuberant combination of fabrics, crochet, embroidery and trimmings. The result is a surprising interplay of volume, texture and colour, rooted in manual skill while renewing the relationship between art and craft for the twenty-first century. Formed from a central body, head, tail and multiple arms, Vasconcelos’ Valkyry also combines artisanal knowledge and expertise with technological elements. Light is woven into its structure, creating effects of vibration and breath, and giving this powerful being a sense of presence, movement, and life.
