Real Embarcação transforms a traditional Portuguese boat into a powerful symbol of memory, identity, and cultural reinvention. Constructed from an actual vessel and covered in hand-painted tiles, the work elevates a familiar maritime object into a poetic and monumental artwork. By appropriating a real boat and subjecting it to a process of artistic transformation, Vasconcelos turns a utilitarian object into a vessel of imagination, navigating between past and present. The title suggests both maritime history and symbolic authority. In Vasconcelos’ hands, the boat becomes more than an object of passage: it becomes a carrier of cultural memory, bearing histories of craft, navigation, ornament, and exchange.
